I started this tradition some 25 years ago when I visited Ireland for the first time and purchased a belleek vase as a wedding present for my niece. Irish on Grand is owned by Maeve O’Mara and Liam O’Neill, both of whom hail from County Cork. Maeve was born and raised in the seaside village of Crosshaven and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1986. Liam, who grew up in Cork city, followed a few months later and they were married in Minnesota in 1987. Irish on Grand is the oldest Irish store in the twin cities and the shop itself is located in a converted three storey residential house that retains all the old charm of polished wood and stained glass. It is ideally situated on Grand Avenue, known as the “Jewel in the Crown of St. Paul” – a wonderful area with great restaurants and shops, especially the smaller unique type of store. The front of the store is beautifully landscaped with gardens, stone benches and a very large, carved harp as the focal point! But Irish on Grand is more than a building in a great area. It is a resource for the many Irish and Irish Americans who live in the Twin Cities and beyond. It is the place to contact with questions about all things Irish – upcoming concerts, new CD’s, happenings around town, festival updates or, as is the case for many people, upcoming trips to Ireland. Not alone do you get the benefit of Maeve and Liam’s extensive knowledge but also that of Mary B. and Mary H., both of whom also hail from Ireland – Mary B. from Lucan, west of Dublin & Mary H. from Carlow. Nora, and Grethe keep everyone in order. Irish on Grand is very much a community hub – a place to buy the best of Irish goods from Kerry Gold butter to Galway Crystal, but also a place to drop by for a chat, check out the newest books, find out what’s happening in the Irish community or just to see who you might bump in to on a Saturday morning! You might find musicians playing on the porch, Santa playing the bagpipes or Irish authors signing their books, but whoever is there you are guaranteed a warm welcome and easy conversation. Maeve and Liam aim to continue the tradition of Irish on Grand by stocking the store with unique, high quality Irish goods. With many contacts in Ireland, involvement in the Twin cities Irish community and regular attendance at Irish Goods fairs both in Ireland and the US, they are uniquely positioned to purchase products that represent the best of Irish craftsmanship and materials. Their shop is not only to be a showcase of the incredible array of top class items that Ireland produces, but also a place that caters to their customers.
